Technical Art Mentorship

With Christopher Berry | Principal Technical Artist

Mentorship Info

In this Technical Art Mentorship we will focus on creating pipeline tools. Using Python we can explore create tools for Maya and Unreal Engine with an emphasis on production ready workflows and methods that can carry over into production.

We will start with a discussion of what goals you have regarding your skills, and how you would like to grow during the Mentorship. To execute on these goals, we can walk through the process of developing a specific tool you have in mind, work on developing some commonly used tools, or explore developing the infrastructure needed to build a whole suite of tools.

With a clear goal in mind, we will go through the iteration/exploration process to verify that the tools we write best serve the end user. From there we will explore how to structure your tools/code such that that you, and the rest of your team, can understand and reuse them as much as possible.

By the end of the Mentorship, you will have a better understanding of writing tools with the artist/end user in mind, as well as writing clean, readable, maintainable, and highly reusable code.

Mentor Bio

Christopher Berry | Principal Technical Artist

Berry is currently working at Deviation Games as a Principal Technical Artist. With over 10+ years in the games industry he has worked on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor & Fallen Order, Assassins Creed: Odyssey & Origins, Gears of War 4, and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End among many others as a Technical Artist.

If anything needs to be done more than once, you can bet that Berry is spending time figuring out how to never do it by hand. Whether is turning two buttons into one button or devising an entirely new way to interact with art data, he absolutely loves removing tedium and facilitating a pipeline that lets artists/users to spend as much time as possible focusing on the parts of their job that they enjoy most. Outside of the office, he explores how to take his technical understanding and problem solving and apply it to tangible artistic endeavors such as 3D printing, prop making, or woodworking.
